WHY IS SOCIAL COMMUNITY IN CRISIS?
What determines a society's desire to live together?
To answer this question, we must first define what a nation is. But what exactly defines a nation?
For as long as humankind has existed, a nation has been founded on a collective will to share a common destiny. And this will is built upon shared values, which unite us in a common collective endeavor. The problem? Not all societies share the same reference points. Some values are irreconcilable, some beliefs too rigid, too confining, to allow for coexistence. The Enlightenment, in the 18th century, nevertheless outlined a path: that of freedom of thought, the dignity of the human being, and fundamental rights. But even today, some groups within nations have never had access to this autonomy of thought. Held hostage by dogmas, powers, or traditions, they have been unable to develop their critical thinking skills.
The true tragedy, across all civilizations, is that over centuries or millennia, we have sought to create societies centered exclusively on individual self-interest instead of the common good, thus rendering people entirely dependent on their oppressors. The result? Governments out of touch. Castes that, as Simone Veil denounced, serve above all their own interests.
And without an overall vision, no society can stand. For it is the common interest that holds our common home together and protects us from being divided.
But then what makes a society, if not a group of individuals bound by a common vision?
Individuality, encompassing both being and individual interest, are two distinct things. Just as the individual and society are equally distinct. The individual seeks meaning, an identity. Society, for its part, must provide a framework conducive to this, precisely so that we can live and share these common values. Like a lighthouse in the dark night, values serve as our guide, an anchor in the vastness of the universe, and help us reach out to others with the impulse that drives us to unite in this desire to live together in the smallest of circumstances.
